Metal Gear Solid: Rising Gameplay Shown
The Microsoft press conference is already in full swing here at E3 this year and already some exciting news has emerged from the conference. After Call of Duty was shown, legendary game developer Hideo Kojima took the stage to give us the very first taste of gameplay for Metal Gear Solid: Rising. The game, according to one of Kojima's producers, revolves around the phrase Zan Datsu. Zan, in Japanese, means "to cut," while datsu means "to take." This phrase will inform us how Rising will work.

The first segment of the demonstration featured a large cybernetic soldier carefully patrolling a dark factory with a massive arm-mounted gun at the ready. The soldier looked similar to the FROG soldiers we saw in Metal Gear Solid 4, but quite a bit bigger. A burst of movement can be seen in the rafters and the soldier responds accordingly, unloading a clip into the ceiling but to little effect. Raiden drops down from the shadows and effortlessly slices his enemy in two, ripping a glowing energy line from the machine's innards. Turning to face the camera, Raiden holds the cord of energy in his hand and absorbs the eerie blue light calmly, which sounds like this is the "datsu" part of the gameplay.

The second section of the demonstration featured real gameplay, where Raiden was moving through a sandy environment and tearing through a group of human soldiers. This looked like fairly standard hack-n-slash style gameplay, though at one point Raiden does cut through an entire van, which was cool. But it got even cooler when Raiden tossed a soldier into the air and aimed his slices with a glowing guide and cut the soldier to pieces in a flurry of bloody limbs. The demo ended with Raiden cutting a watermelon with almost comical precision.

Nothing else was shown, but this was enough to get the crowd at the press conference excited.
